The first of the Hunt, Point and Retrieve (HPR) breeds to arrive, the GSP has on several occasions won that coveted award in the world of the gundog, the Dual Championship, a dog which is able to beat all comers in the field and in the show ring. The GSP stems from dogs known collectively as bird dogs. The basis for the breed was almost certainly the kennels of Prince Albrecht zu Somsbrauenfels, who owned Schweisshunds, a breed of good but slowish working hounds with outstanding ability to scent game, which were crossed with traditional English Pointer stock. The breed comes in either black or liver or both colours may be spotted or ticked with white, the coat being short, flat and coarse to the feel. As a result, he is a very easy dog to keep clean and wholesome even in the foulest of weathers. Medium-sized, trainable and friendly, he combines grace, energy and stamina in a neat frame. Last year 2,200 dogs from 22 different countries competed over the weekend, in front of 2,000 people. The festival has almost tripled in size in just three years, so 2008 is set to be the biggest International Agility Festival yet! Don't miss this opportunity to find out about the world's fastest growing doggy sport and enjoy a great day out with your family at the International Agility Festival this summer. In these warmer months a quick trip to the shop in the car does not mean much to us, but for our dogs it is a different matter. The temperature inside a car and outside is staggeringly different; cars can become like ovens with temperatures soaring to 120F/49C within six to ten minutes. Even with windows open, it can take just 20 minutes for dogs to suffer from heatstroke and die an agonising death. Even responsible dog owners can make the mistake of not realising just how lethal travelling in the heat with their dog can be and the Kennel Club has produced a set of guidelines outlining the safe way to travel with your dog in these warmer months. To read these important guidelines please visit http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/1240/2d80C41/83 ***************************************************************************************************** The Young Kennel Club is again host ing its popular National Training Camp this summer, for its members aged 8-15 years, and their dogs. Members are taught responsible dog ownership in a fun and friendly environment and given the opportunity to try new disciplines as well as develop and learn more about their chosen areas. Trainers are on hand at all levels to help members in Agility, Obedience, Flyball, Handling, the Good Citizen Dog Scheme and Heelwork to Music. As well as the training, this year the programme includes a fantastic gundog display with the chance to have a go at the training side, a hands-on grooming session for every member as well as a workshop and performance by Mary Ray. Social activities are just as important and give everyone the chance to make new friends and have lots of fun. Activities for 2008 include talent night (based on movie themes), camp challenge (to make a dog with various weird and wonderful items), Wild West night (with line dancing and saloon games) and the last night party (an intergalactic fancy dress spectacular).
